Preserve Sausalito’s Working Waterfront

Sausalito has a rich maritime history and is home
to a vibrant maritime industry today.

As homeowners and business owners, we believe it is our responsibility to support the best path forward for Sausalito. As maritime professionals we know it is critical to preserve our heritage and to continue to support maritime industry businesses – all of which are an important piece of our economy and an even bigger part of our local flavor and charm.

At present, our working maritime community is at risk to developers who would eliminate anything in the way of constructing condos with views. Sausalito Working Waterfront (SWW) is fighting to preserve our maritime history and safeguard a place for it to continue to serve boats and the 2,500 yachts and 500 houseboats which are berthed in Sausalito. If we have no place to build, repair, or support these yachts, they will not be able to stay here. Houseboats have already lost their only builder and are in dire straits. Worse, these waterfront locations are under active and real threat from developers who want to eliminate everything maritime and replace it with only condos and parking. We may lose the businesses which support our maritime heritage and lose the waterfront space which houses them.

Sausalito Working Waterfront (SWW) is fighting to preserve our maritime history and safeguard a place for it to continue to serve boats and the 2100  yachts and 450 houseboats which are berthed in Sausalito. If we have no place to build, repair, or support these yachts, they will not be able to stay here. Houseboats have already lost their only builder and are in dire straits. Worse, these waterfront locations are under active and real threat from developers who want to replace maritime services with condos or build condos next to our boatyards leading to inevitable conflict. We may lose the businesses which support our maritime heritage and lose the waterfront space which houses them. This is happening all over the country including in neighboring Alameda.

We encourage you to help save our maritime livelihood and to keep over-development out. SWW is at the forefront of this fight, and they need all of us onboard!

There are many ways to help. Go to sausalitoworkingwaterfront.org and:

  1. Sign-up for SWW newsletter
  2. Sign-on to the SWW open letter to City Council
  3. Go to a showing of SWWC’s documentary, Sausalito’s Marinship, A Working Waterfront at Risk
  4. Donate

Local maritime organizations in Sausalito which offer sailing lessons, boat building classes, engine classes, maritime apprenticeships, sailing on the Bay, and kayaking.  Just some of them are Call of the Sea, Cass Marina, Fine Day for Sailing, Freda B, Spaulding Boatworks, and Sea Trek.

Supporting SWW will benefit these Sausalito businesses and others which are now under threat from new development being planned for the working waterfront.

Thank you for taking the time to learn about our local community.
