ABOUT ALISON’S HISTORY WITH TALL SHIPS IN SAN FRANCISCO

Alison Healy is the former Founder and Executive Director of Sail San Francisco. In this role, she recruited and hosted international sailing ships to many Pacific ports, and especially to San Francisco from 1999-2009. Since then, she has worked as a volunteer to provide the same services to individual ships upon arrival. She and her partner/husband Luis Martinez, the former Naval Engineer aboard Mexican tall Ship Cuauhtemoc, now perform this role as Co-owners of Bay Area Marine Services with the desire to increase international visits of naval and educational tall ships.

Visiting ships may contact BAMS for a myriad of support services provided at no cost. Just some of these services include media outreach and coordination of press conferences, scheduling diplomatic meetings with military and elected officials, engineering services, translation services, scheduling of crew activities, and working with maritime partners to secure free and discounted maritime services. When an international tall ship arrives in San Francisco she is here to show her flag, her people and culture with the mission of fostering international relations – as a way of building a platform for peace.

HAVE YOU EVER TOURED THE INSIDE OF A TALL SHIP?

Visitors can board the ship for crew-guided tours to learn about navigating such a big sailing vessel, and about the country of origin. It is a privilege to be on board and participate in this unique piece of maritime history where you will see the officer’s ceremonial swords, the biggest ship’s wheel ever and lots of polished brass too. During these tours you will hear new languages, smell new flavors from the galley and perhaps be lucky enough to observe some military or maritime traditions or protocols too.

``You were the spark that brought many cultures together in spite of all odds. Ecuador is deeply indebted to you for your cultural awareness and tremendous support of our mission as floating ambassadors.``

– Ecuadorian Ambassador Y.Ibaki

``I wish the eyes of the blind could have seen what you created, such a symphony for the eyes! I can't thank you enough for the selfless dedication and commitment you displayed by bringing these nations together. ``

– SF Resident, A. Gambini

Kids and adults alike have fun on this tour which is always free!

Naval tall ships are sent to foreign ports where they can forge new relationships through public diplomacy including public tours, diplomatic meetings, sailing exchanges and cultural activities.  Young officers and crew learn about the world while local residents enjoy learning about a new culture on their home turf. Sail training ships generally sail across the globe for six months stopping in different maritime ports of multiple countries while teaching school classes onboard.

During their circumnavigation, cadets learn about team work by setting and dousing about 28 sails, including climbing out on yard arms to work the sails or standing at attention during a parade of sail. Did you know that when you step on board a tall ship, you are bound by the laws of their home country? You will enjoy the foreign aromas coming from the galley, listening to foreign languages being spoken and will be witness to military traditions. The Governor may be onboard for a formal lunch with the Ambassador; you never know! During their five day visit, the city is filled with hundreds white uniformed cadets. This is your chance to represent our country well, for all crew are considered diplomats having been invited by the State Department. They come to foreign ports with only one goal – to create friendship and goodwill amongst all peoples.

While the tall ships are visiting, Bay Area Marine Services will serve as the tall ship host organization at no charge, interfacing with the City of San Francisco, Embassies and Consuls, The Port of San Francisco, The Coast Guard (USCG) and many other agencies to assist with diplomatic plans, media coverage, crew exchanges, activities, and discounted ship services. Of course, BAMS will offer our mobile ship repair and marine engineering services to any visiting tall ship too!
